- A song so good that it has become a soul cult classic
Anything written and produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis is gonna be a hit. Period! That’s what happened with “Tell Me if You Still Care” by The S.O.S Band ‘cause this song peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot Soul Songs in ‘83. I remember growing up listenin’ to this song on the radio, but I never knew there was a video until this year. Y’all, check out this full video on Youtube . They had special effects and everything.
The S.O.S Band did their thing with this song. My favorite moment is the ‘listen to my heartbeat’ part when the bass comes in really heavy. The drama of it all, chile. Look at that part in the video, too. Might make you chuckle a little bit.
On top of this song being a hit for the SOS Band, it’s been sampled, covered, smothered, fried…just kidding. This ain’t Waffle House. #Badjoke But this song has been an inspiration for other artists for a long time. One that comes to mind is the interpolation in the bridge of Kirk Franklin’s “Smile.” Oh, and can’t forget about Monica’s cover of the song for her debut album, Miss Thang in ‘95. Now, I know y’all remember this one.
