“I Can’t Stand the Rain” is a song originally recorded by Ann Peebles in 1973, and written by Ann Peebles, Don Bryant, and Bernard “Bernie” Miller. This steamy heartbreaker is about a woman who can’t stand the sound of rain against her window, since it reminds her of her lost love (note the double meaning of window pane/pain in the lyric). Produced by Willie Mitchell, the song became Ann Peebles’ biggest hit when, in 1973, it reached #38 on the US Pop Chart and #6 on the R&B chart. This song also reached #41 on the UK singles chart in April 1974.
