Written by Al Green, Willie Mitchell and Al Jackson Jr., this song was one of three hit singles from the Call Me album along with “Here I Am (Come and Take Me)” and “Call Me (Come Back Home).”
“You Ought to Be With Me” was Green’s fifth gold-certified single. He would go on to earn three more, the last being “Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy)” in 1974. This song was also a hit on the US Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart, where it held the top position for one week in December 1972.
