Click the video below to hear the song that sampled “Hung Up On My Baby” by Isaac Hayes. Did y’all know Geto Boys “Mind Playing Tricks on Me” (1991) sampled “Hung Up On My Baby” (1974) by Isaac Hayes? Isaac Hayes produced “Hung Up On My Baby” for the movie Three Tough Guys. The movie soundtrack was actually composed, conducted and performed by Isaac Hayes.

But can we just talk about how Isaac Hayes is one of the great pillars of sampling. The Black Moses Of Soul wrote, produced, and/or performed songs that have been sampled by hip-hop greatness. His music has been just as integral to how hip-hop sounded in the ’80s and ’90s as anyone. Without Isaac Hayes and Stax Records, a significant portion of our favorite hip-hop records wouldn’t exist.

Y’all, I grew up listening to Geto Boys. I’m from Mo. City, Texas so I listened to a lot of rap from the South. I constantly heard “Mind Playing Tricks On Me” on the radio and learned every word. I still know every word…of the radio edit. If you know you know. Anyway, when Scarface flipped Hayes’ “Hung Up On My Baby” for the Geto Boys’ 1991 classic “Mind Playing Tricks On Me,” it gave the Texas rap icons a hit — #1 on the Hot Rap Singles chart, and #23 on the Billboard Hot 100. And yes, this is the version I used to listen to growing up in Texas.

If you listen to this song for a mere 10 seconds (and are unaware of this song), consider your life changed. But even while the Geto Boys song is great, Hayes’ original is possibly one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever composed. “Hung Up on My Baby” is 6 minutes and 17 seconds of pure perfection.
